Shift Supervisor
Job Category: Gym Management
Job Description:

The Gravity Vault Hoboken is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Shift Supervisor to join our team. The Shift Supervisor will lead the charge in providing a friendly, organized rock climbing experience for all customers. During their assigned shift, Shift Supervisors ensure that front desk operations run smoothly, safety standards are met out on the climbing floor, staff members are productive and customer satisfaction is high. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in retail or fitness industry, with proven experience in leadership and team management.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the facility operation and flow of classes and events
  • Assign duties to employees and oversee their progress
  • Provide guidance and feedback to employees when needed
  • Manage staff schedules ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and adjusting as needed 
  • Support operational excellence and strive to consistently exceed customer expectations
  • Take bookings and final payments for events and large groups
  • Address and resolve any customer and/or employee issues in a timely manner
  • Report on shift operations, including any issues or successes, to upper management maintaining clear and effective communication with both staff and management
  • Count cash at the end of the shift and manage bank deposits
  • Enforce safety protocols creating a safe working environment for customers and staff
  • Other job related duties as assigned

Requirements: 

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role, preferably in retail or fitness related industry.
  • Weekday and weekend afternoon and evening availability (approximately 15-20 hours per week).
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on customer service.
  • Quick and effective problem solving skills

Maintenance Staff

Job Description:

The Gravity Vault Hoboken's maintenance team plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, functionality and cleanliness of our climbing facility. This position involves routine inspection and maintenance of climbing gear, walls, and facility infrastructure. The maintenance team works closely with the Location Managers and designated point person to ensure all operational and safety standards are upheld and the necessary inventory and equipment needs are met in a timely manner. 

Key Responsibilities:

Gear & Equipment Inspections and Maintenance

  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of climbing gear including:
    • Auto Belays: Weekly inspections and adherence to recertification schedules.
    • Ropes, Harnesses, and Carabiners: Bi-weekly inspections and as needed.
    • Quickdraws & Anchors: Every six months and as needed.
    • Rappel Ledge: Monthly inspections.
  • Maintain detailed inspection logs and maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure timely rotation and replacement of gear when required.
  • Perform and document all corrective maintenance and replacements.

Climbing Wall & Surface Maintenance

  • Perform weekly and as-needed maintenance on climbing walls and volumes:
    • Repair stuck or spinning holds.
    • Replace or repair broken or missing T-nuts.
    • Clean climbing walls, particularly during slower periods or prior to special events.
  • Conduct hold rotation and maintenance:
    • Strip and clean top rope, lead routes, and bouldering problems.
    • Wash holds, properly store bolts, and return unused items to designated storage.
    • Maintain a clean and organized route setting room on a daily basis.

Facility and Floor Maintenance

  • Maintain the cleanliness and condition of facility flooring (blue + black padded floors).
  • Ensure that route setting areas are clean, safe, and organized at all times.

Inventory Management

  • Coordinate monthly and as-needed inventory checks for:
    • Bolts, T-nuts, and wall maintenance supplies (in coordination with the Head Route Setter).
    • Climbing ropes, harnesses, carabiners, and other gear.
    • Route tags and maintenance tools.
  • Properly mark and report damaged T-nuts and other gear to management.
  • Ensure all unused holds and bolts are returned to appropriate bins and storage.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to Work-at-Height safety standards and participate in all required training.
  • Lead by example in demonstrating safe work practices for both staff and customers.
  • Stay current with all certification requirements related to maintenance and climbing operations.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as the maintenance point of contact with the management team.
  • Work closely with the Location Managers to determine maintenance priorities and execute plans efficiently.
  • Proactively identify maintenance needs and follow through with appropriate action.

The Maintenance Team is expected to collaborate effectively with belayers, front desk staff, the youth programs coordinator, and the management team. Team members may also be assigned tasks outside of their core responsibilities as needed to support overall facility operations.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Prior experience in climbing wall operations and/or maintenance is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of climbing equipment and adherence to industry safety standards.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to upholding a safe and controlled climbing environment.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Physically capable of working on ladders and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficient in the safe operation and supervision of power tools and ladders.
  • Comfortable working at heights and on ropes in accordance with established safety protocols.
  • Availability: Monday - Friday 9am - 2pm (approximately 15-25 hours per week).

Assistant Team Coach
Job Category: Junior Climbing Teams
Job Description:

The Gravity Vault Montclair is seeking a passionate and dedicated Assistant Team Coach to support the development and training of our Youth Climbing Teams. In this role, you will collaborate with head coaches to implement structured training programs, lead engaging practices, and mentor climbers as they progress in skill, confidence, and competition. This is a hands-on opportunity to inspire young athletes, promote a love of climbing, and contribute to a positive team culture aligned with The Gravity Vault’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support and supervise youth climbers during scheduled team practices.
  • Motivate and mentor athletes to help them achieve personal and competitive goals.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive and growth-focused team environment.
  • Ensure all practices and activities are conducted in accordance with safety standards and The Gravity Vault’s values.
  • Attend competitions with the team.
  • Communicate with athletes and parents regarding goals, progress and events.
Qualifications:
  • Competition climbing experience.
  • USA Climbing Coach Certification.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience coaching youth in climbing or another individual/team sport.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches and gym staff.
  • Weekday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning availability.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly rate range: $15.50 - $19.00/hour.
